One of the little things that bothered me about the Nexus 5 was the stock keyboard - specifically, the limited symbol choices when I long-pressed the "." key. There were only (was it six?) characters available and major ones which I often have need of were missing such as the semicolon and parentheses.

Well, late yesterday my N5 auto-updated the Google Keyboard. I didn't think much of it until just a few minutes ago when I saw this:

I'm a happy guy today! :)

Nice.. Much better now!

Anyone else miss long pressing on the smiley icon and then quickly choosing emoticons? Emoji are OK.. but built in emoticons were nicer for me.

I'm very envious of your joy...

The latest google keyboard update did not fix this update disaster on the original Nexus7. I also updated the Nexus7 to 4.4 with the hope that doing so would also fix the keyboard, but it didn't/

The Nexus7 has come a long way in a year and a half toward serving as my primary computer, but, the update that removed the extended punctuation menu is impacting my writing severely.

Your post gives a bit of hope (along with a new google keyboard review) that also indicated that this had been fixed.

long pressing on the smiley icon

Tap the emoticon key and select the greyed out emoticon icon at the top of the keyboard on the far right.

This will both bring up that screen, and make that the default screen each time you press the emoticon key.

Hope that this information is of value.
