Try out a camera app called 'Open Camera'
In video settings under Audio Source check 'optimised for voice'
I tested this in a dead quiet environment and there was zero static.
I thought of trying other video taking apps to check out their settings when I used a voice recorder to test out the mics, and during silence there was no static. So the Pixel 2 XL is capable of recording clean audio, you just have to direct it there.
Anyways, Open Camera seems like a pretty good app in general, no ads and open source I think.
