What the hell is custom recovery? And how do i get it? My rom manager doesn't have my phones model as an option for verification. So what else can I do?

Ahhhhhh! GET RID OF ROM MANAGER!!! It bricks Optimuses!!!

Ahem...anyway, a custom recovery is a recovery that can do stuff stock recovery can't, like flash custom roms.

I recommend drewwalton's Cannibal Open Touch recovery, but honestly you should do some reading before you go flashing things ;)

Custom recoveries help you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache (as well as other stuff) and also flash(install) different roms and tweaks.

A rom is like a different operating system. For instance, stock optimus Vs come with a froyo rom.

You have to have a custom recovery in order to change your rom to a better rom(such as backside, which is a cyanogenmod7 rom, which is MUCH more customizable, or quattrimus, which is a cyanogenmod9 rom, which is still in beta testing, but mostly functional).

As the others said, GET RID OF ROM MANAGER.
Also, make sure you're rooted before you try anything. It'd be best if you read the stickies but you can send me a message asking for help if you need. Just click my name and click send personal message.

Should add, NEVER-EVER FACTORY RESET FROM THE PRIVACY MENU ONCE YOU ARE ROOTED.

ROM = Read Only Memory

Any O/S BIOS, Firmware, Boot.img or Kernel is ready only. Any changes that you wish do to either of those, must be done with High-Level-CMD input, and that is what Root does; allowing for High-Level-CMD input.

I've been using this for the last year with no problems. I've ran gingerbreak and quattrimus on this with no problems.

The thing was I didn't think the menu I was in to install them was the custom recovery screen. (I know now that I was dense as hell to not know that little fact.) But still, how is rom manager bad? How have other people crashed their phones because I've done okay so far. My main confusion was flashing roms because I see there are ALOT of ways to do so and the only way I know how is .zip download and flashing I just thought maybe there were different custom recoveries for things like adb shells. I'm still unclear on a lot of this but I'm trying to learn as I go.

I HIGHLY recommend removing ROM manager from your phone.
The reason why your phone model is not listed in ROM manager, is because your phone is NOT supported by the dev of the app, for various reasons.

Quattrimus is NOT created by the same people as Clockwork mod. Quattrimus was birthed by tdm, who is not associated with clockwork mod in any way.

While ROM manager may seem harmless, it does not agree with the Optimus One line (S, U, V, M, etc.), and frequently causes random bricks amongst these phone models, and the people that use them.

DO NOT download anything through ROM manager, ESPECIALLY and ROMs. 100% of the time, any ROM that is made for the Optimus One line that is available through ROM manager, was not the original ROM made by the dev, and is not supported by the dev, nor was it submitted by the dev.

Read the stickies, read the threads, read the tutorials. ROM manager is NOT supported by ANY of the Devs for the Optimus One line, nor does ROM manager support the Optimus One line.

Take our advice, and remove ROM manager from your phone, for the safety of both your phone, and your Android experience.

I recommend either the cannibal recovery (havent tested it but I hear a lot of good reviews) or the cwm recovery.

...or BobZ's recovery. It's rock solid stable, works for old and new screens, and is the one suggested by the IHO wiki.

+1 for Cannibal recovery. It's the best in my opinion.

Don't use Tom manager but you can use clockwork mod recovery as it does work on the optimus v. Its when you go thru ron manager is when it gets messed up.

Rom manager is an awesome app. Don't be confused. I've used it for almost 2 years. Many people with other phones swear by it. Here is the problem with rom manager:
Certain optimus phones use a different screen than the one you and I have. It would essentially" brick" (render useless) your phone if it had the other screen type.

My wife has an optimus we bought recently... it would be a brick if I ran rom manager on it. So that is why everyone freaks about rom manager on these forums.
