X error, "communicating with server"

Hey guys. I have a droid x, a spare one, i got it in a trade. Well it worked perfectly fine before i took it to verizon to switch over. It is rooted, and they performed a factory reset on it, when they did that and i got the phone back to activation, gmail, and backup assistant, then it always just goes into syncing "communicating with server" but never connects. Ive done soft resets, hard resets, and nothing has worked. Is there hope for it? Should i try installing a new rom? Any and all suggestions will help me! Thanks!
