Yikes! Big scare just now--thought my N7 just died.

I set my N7 down for a while and when I went to use it, the screen was dark. I repeatedly pressed the power button, but nothing. then I noticed a very slight glimmer of light on the screen. I tried holding down both volume buttons, but nada. Then I tried the power and the up button and voila! I got the Google boot-up screen and now it seems back to normal.

Anyone else have their N7 go dark and if so, any clue what's causing this?

I think its a software bug which was reported by very few N7 owners.
Google will fix it in the next update if they are aware of it.

Something goes wrong with the auto brightness where it turns it all the way down.

Even if I always use fixed brightness?

I worried could not get my nexus to start up second time after shutting it off, didn't realise how long you actually have to hold the power button down for.

im totally familiar with how long to hold the button if it is off. The problem today was that my n7 was sleeping and wouldn't resume

That happened to me! From reading these forums. My first thought, "It's a defective unit."

There's a not-uncommon problem that seems to haunt Android devices called the "sleep of death", where your device enters deep sleep mode but doesn't wake up when you press the power button, forcing you to do a hard reset.

So the Nexus 7 has a reboot shortcut? (Holding power and volume up?)

It probably wasn't a reboot. It was probably more like the OP turned it off while holding power at some point and then turned it on again. As far as I know, there's no reboot combination, but I'm not near my Nexus 7 to check. You can confirm it yourself though.
