You must have favorites to set up a ringtone

My custom ringtones have stopped working since the last security update for my Verizon S9+.

When I try to set them up again, I get, "You must have favorites to set up a ringtone. Only favorited buttons are available for ringtones."

I get this same message when I try to set Notification sounds.

I have lots of favorited contacts, so why this message?

This isn't the only change problem since that update, but I'll take them one at a time.

Thanks for any advice.

must be a verizon thing. i can set custom ringtones and text tones to any contact on my at&t s9 after the update. at&t actually made it easier to do right in the text message settings

That's for message threads only I think.

Had the same problem with the exact same message (there's another thread from 2017 that has a screen shot of it - https://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-8/834593-ringtone-help.html)

I had just transferred all data from my sons old phone to his new one, using Google sync, what I didn't realise he had the "Instant Buttons" apps which was running the ringtones & notifications.

You've either got to go into Instant Buttons and favourite a few sounds and they'll appear when you go into Ringtone or Notification sounds settings or simply uninstall the app to get all the defaults back.

Hope it helps, took me a few hours to work it out!
