YouTube and auto rotate

I would swear that once upon a time, I would be holding my phone in portrait orientation, start playing a YT vid, rotate my phone and the cid would auto rotate and go full screen. Now I have to tap the video and tap the full screen icon. Is that how that is supposed to work?

Those darn bags are always causing trouble.
That behavior always happens on my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet but I can't say I've noticed it on my Pixel 2 XL.

I don't have any issues with phone orientation. It just works.
Maybe I don't have bags.
What's a bag, and why does it cause issues?
