Z2 getting hot

I've had my Z2 for about a week now, and damn this is the best phone I've ever had. Love it. Today though, I was playing with the camera app and it all of a sudden crashed. An error message came up saying it closed because the phone was too hot. I didn't think much of it...

About 10 min later, I was driving with my phone in my pocket, and it got so hot I had to quickly take it out of my pocket. It was really uncomfortable on my leg it was so hot.

One of the things I've been really impressed with is battery life. This afternoon it seemed to go from 50% to 30% really fast (around the time it was overheating).

One other odd thing today. every time I tried to open a text from one particular friend, the text app crashed. Only that one friend though. I could open every other one I tried, except this one contact. Odd.

Welcome to Android Central! Check the Settings>Battery menu to see if any particular app or service is working overtime, which might contribute to overheating.

Also, unmount your SD card (in Settings>Storage) and remove it, then reboot. A corrupt card or file on the card could cause overheating, because the system's Media Scanner might get hung up on the corrupt file, which causes it to work too hard.

Screen was at 71% of usage. This morning it's hot on the charger. I unplugged the phone and 2 hrs later with no use its down to 68%!!! Something is definitely wrong. Going to unmount SD and see what happens

So unmounted SD. Shut phone down for 15 min or so. Started it back up without SD and been using pretty heavily for an hr or so. Phone is cool and only dropped 3%. Excellent battery usage is back. Seems like SD is the problem. Can I just erase and reuse or would I be better off starting new? SD card is 3 or 4 years old, but I've never had a problem with it?.

Well I may have spoke too soon. The SD card is out, but the phone is still getting hot and the camera app is crashing. It's so hot I can't touch the top 1"or so of the same screen. Bummer. What else to check?

I guess I didn't vet this phone as well as I thought. Apparently, this is a common problem, related to the camera. I can't post links since I'm a noob around here, but if you google xperia z2 overheating, lots of hits pop up. Bummer. If I can't find a solution I'll be flipping this phone.

That overheating seems to be a major issue but how prevalent is it?
Probably depends on ambient and how much you're using the camera. Supposedly, it overheats when shooting 4k video, but I have yet to do so.

I still feel like it could be something else, but it's always the camera that shuts down. I used the phone for a week and it never did it. Seems odd that it just started. Today is 82 and I've been using the camera off/on and it hasn't shut down yet. Odd.

I don't get 4k recording, how many people have 4k TVs?

I guess it's an intermittent problem. Thanks for chipping in, any insight is useful.

I know my phone will heat up when I have the screen on full brightness and am using the camera, or watching HD videos.
Go into settings - power management - battery usage

What are your top items? If your camera app is one of the top, and you haven't been using it, go into

Settings - apps - running
Select camera from the list, and click stop.

But show us what your top power consumption apps are. Here is what mine looks like.
I fully charged my phone a night ago, and have been using it since. Still at 50%
