Superuser app question

Is the superuser app integral to rooting? Having followed guides to do so it seems that it is, but what exactly does it do? are there other apps that serve the same function? When one wipes data and re-flashes new roms does one need to re-install it? Or will it just re-install from market automatically once the Google credentials are reestablished?

The superuser app allows certain other apps that need it to get permission to run. For example, to run Titanium Backup, that app needs root permision. Superuser allows you to grant TB that permission. Most custom ROM's have this app baked in, but it can be downloaded from the market.

I don't think I've seen a Gingerbread ROM that you could load on your device that does not have Superuser included in with it since they all need to be rooted to install them. It's nice to have Superuser so then you know which apps you loaded require access to those types of privileges.... and it is the only app that does what it does.

Yeah, generally the ONLY time you're gonna need to worry about this is if your installing a very plain jane, bare-bones, port of a stock OS. For the most part though, most ROM developers will include the SU app with the ROM, and it's usually included with rooted version of stock RUUs too.
