I have been doing backups via CWM for the past 18 months.
Did a restore and would get 'error restoring /data' and as a result, a less than happy device.
Searching, there is an issue w/ CWM in restoring TAR files > 2gb. The backups are valid, just an issue w/ restoration.
So, if this happens to you, backup the backup and open the data.ext3.tar and do a bit of trimming to get below 2gb. Peazip works for me.
Then, to keep CWM happy, do the following from ADB or Terminal. I used terminal.
$ SU
#cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/XXXXXX/
#rm nandroid.md5
#md5sum *img *tar > nandroid.md5
IMPORTANT
Wait until you get a # prompt back.
Then all should be well.
