What are and do apps utilise the light and proximity sensors?

Light and prox sensors are on the top next to the Verizon logo, under the earpiece. They're used during calls and for turning off/dimming/brightening the screen. I doubt any app or game uses them.

And the camera flash. There are a few apps in the market but none of them look very interesting.

If the light sensor on the phone then how come I cannot see my screen in the daylight like I could my bb?

Just the way the screen is. It's viewable sometimes in extreme sunlight if you crank the brightness up.
