POP3 mail issue(not deleting mail)

Keep getting this message when I try to delete 2 messages I think i delete this morning but they are still showing as new messages- " the application Mail(process com.htc.android.mail)has stopped unexpectedly.please try again"

Any idea what I can do to get rid of the new mail notification display on the home screen.
I have tried to delete from my computer but that does not seem to work either.

Try clearing the cache from the mail app.

Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> Running Tab -> Mail (HTC Corporation) Clear Cache
