Try this!

I had DJ05 with custom ROM and kernel before DL09. I followed this, and dunzo!
Folks, I modified the Odin package that installs clockwork recovery so that it *should* work on any future versions without reflashing kernels, and without rooting your device.

This provides a nice way of rooting your device, because as long as you have the cwm update.zip on your sdcard (at the base) and this Odin flashed, you can root your device by merely installing ChainsDD's superuser package via clockwork recovery.

Odin

The Odin package:

ChainsDD's superuser
[APP] Superuser 2.3.6.1 - Now on the Market [2010-09-05] - xda-developers
(you want the ef version)

My modified ChainsDD superuser +busybox package

update.zip to use with clockwork (goes on base of sd card)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2056318/update.zip

If this update.zip gives you trouble, please get it from the source. You will need to rename this file to update.zip.
http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-fascinate.zip

Simply flash the Odin, boot to recovery, apply update.zip and load the superuser package. Done and done. No rage exploit, no fighting with one click methods.

Or, if you are feeling adventurous, you can try Clockwork Recovery RED, which works 100 times better, but has not been heavily tested with non-voodoo installs. It should be ok though.

This method requires ONLY this Odin method. You do not need update.zip unless using rom manager. Credit jt1134 and supercurio for Red cwm. Credit to squash/times-infinity for the idea :)

i tried but it didnt tell me when to do what or what to open when im hopeless

hey dboy,
dont get all down on yourself, pick your head up and try again.
this stuff takes a little time to get use to, most of us are still learning and always will be. if you didnt get it well all that means is you need to research more and try a different approach. Nothing hopeless.

Chin up:), maybe ill try to do a more detailed tutorial this weekend if i get a chance

On another note, I'm getting ready to root this thing for the first time and am new to the whole process. I'm going to try method 2 first. If it doesn't finish or work is it going to screw up my phone?

Use the method 2. I just did it and it worked fine. If you rooted before, make sure you download the new ZIP with the new root files in it. And, make sure you are actually in that directory when you START_ROOT.

Also, there is a link on that post that mentions you may have to unplug/plug-in the USB cable. I didn't have to on mine.

If Method 2 doesn't work for you immediately, try it a second time. The first 2 times I tried to root DL09 I kept getting kicked back with errors, and I know a few others have had it happen as well. I don't know why, but it eventually ends up working it seems.

I would use method 3 actually:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/33899-how-root-74.html#post526222 and go to reply #739 by DroidXcon.
I tried using the 1-click root method by Dirkk (which I used before the DL09 update) and it didn't work. Method 3 is actually not that confusing. Just remember that when you download the FascinateRoot_v2.zip file, you need to pay attention to where you extract the folder to. From there, just copy and paste commands to the CMD prompt and you are golden. The guys here are super smart, so ask around if you get stuck.

Definitely go with method 3 - I tried method 2 numerous times, in numerous ways and couldn't get it to work. The third method intimidated me a bit, although I don't know why now - the instructions made it so easy and you literally just copy paste everything. I was rooted in less than 10 minutes total using that method.
