People App - Friends, Family, Coworkers Duplicates

I've syncs up my GMail contacts with my phone and in GMail I have a 'family' group and a 'friends' group. The problem is that the galaxy nexus comes pre-programmed with 'family', 'friends', and 'coworkers'. So now in the people app there are two 'friends' and two 'family' categories. I also have my coworkers in a group of my company name instead of 'coworkers'.

Is there any way to remove the phone categories (empty 'family','friends', and ;coworkers; groups) or merge them?

Also, the 'coworkers' group on the phone does show up in GMail which make me feel like it's syncing from GMail but not uploading. Am I missing something?

Contact groups can only be managed via gmail.com. Playing around with the phone, it doesn't look like there's a way to remove the default groups
