I was thinking about buying one of these apps. Has anyone else here tried one?

The biggest thing im worried about is battery life obviously. Advice would be GREAT!

You can download a trial version of Tasker if you go to their website. I looked at Locale, but it seems like they nickel-and-dime you for all of the different plug-ins, so I didn't even bother with it. You might try Llama (1.2012.02.26.1406): http://market.android.com/details?id=com.kebab.Llama - I'm still looking into it, but on my Thunderbolt it doesn't allow me to turn on/off mobile data.

Tasker is not a big drain in my experience. I have it do all the typical stuff like track my location, track the hours I work each day, start/stop meeting mode etc. I also have it set to check everything at 90s intervals when the screen is off. I don't have battery issues with it. It also works well with NFC Task Launcher, as you can directly launch tasker tasks from there. For me, tasker is a super app and well worth the small price.
