Better 3G reception in non-LTE area using the LTE/CDMA option

I live in a 3G only area and have had 3G reception issues with my GNex since day one. I've tried everything to remedy this problem because I just got the phone at the end of May and have had no success until yesterday. Yesterday I switched the mobile network setting from CDMA only back to LTE/CDMA and am seeing better reception. Has anyone else noticed this? I realize that it may use more battery to have both radios searching for signal but it's made my phone actually work instead of making me cuss and call customer service for a frustrating 2 hour screamfest.
