Sound quality deteriorated after installing Winamp?

I transferred some .WMA files to my GNex and dowloaded Winamp
(since GooglePlay doesn't play that format). The sound quality was very poor
using Winamp (muffled, reduced dynamic range) on .WMA and .MP3 files.
The sound had also then deteriorated when playing .MP3 using GooglePlay?

Uninstalled WInamp and GooglePlay sounds great again - strange.
BTW, I've also been using Volume+ for months.

Any suggestions on a music app capable of handling more formats or
a good conversion app?
