Just got back from a stay in Europe, where I installed SIM cards in Austria (A1) and Czech Republic (T-Mobile). Both worked just fine, and relatively automatic. You just need to make sure that in Settings>More settings>Mobile networks>Access Point Names, that the new (foreign) cell provider is listed and selected.

Also tried unsuccessfully to use a Vodaphone SIM in Czech, but failed because the install wasn't automatic, and none of the clueless worker bees could get the install to complete (instructions were in Czech, which was no help to me). Maybe there's a reason that both T-Mobile and O2 had long lines in their Prague stores while Vodaphone had no customers.
