some quick googling revealed some GS3 owners with similar complaints.

Above was the suggestion. I have no idea if it works or if it is safe to do. Perhaps useful... ? I don't know.
Totally worked for me and my GNote2 has been like this for months, I just learned to live with it after trying to do so many things to fix it. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!!

This is the only way and the correct solution. Step 1 for the resolution for this kind of problem is the reply given .

UGH! It didn't work for me or my son. We both have Gnote2's my problem is in the email notification drop down window. It says I have 9 unread messages.

It occurred when I accidentally deleted a couple emails and went to my trash folder and copied them back. I have sence tried:
marking everything in every email account as unread, then again read
    cleared the phone's cache
    the email cache
tried the badge provider's trick and rebooted.
    I've done a battery pull.
Went into Android assistant and tried it all there. Nothing works.

    Any clues?
And when we figure THAT one out, my son's phone shows a negative 1 as in (-1) on his email desktop icon. (I suggested he needed to write home more often, he was not amused.)

This was driving me nuts lately on my S4. Not sure why it happens but I got rid of the erroneous unread icon notification, until the next time it happens. I sorted by read/unread and deleted the unread. I know for sure that one of the offenders had in fact been read and deleted on my computer many hours ago. I tried many synchs in the meantime to try to get rid of it.

But it doesn't work for my mommy's phone. That's Galaxy Gio. I've cleared the data and restarted the phone but I still have that damned message! Help please! Mommy is going to kill me LoL

    Help please!

It just goes OK by selecting select all messages and delete 'em. It seems that the message was hidden ans by deleting all messages , it would be OK

This also works for Galaxy S2 phones too! I registered specifically to thank all who contributed to this thread. I'm about to upgrade my phone, but my OCD was going into overdrive because that BadgeProvider was telling me I had unread emails.
