I have an old GSM phone with a T-Mobile prepaid sim card. I keep it on the daily plan which comes with unlimited voice/text and data.

When I put that GSM sim card inside my Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Note 2, voice and text work just fine.

However, I can't get any data at all. In addition, the phone also keeps giving me a warning message that it's a non-Verizon sim card. :)

Are there ways around these problems?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You would need to root, then do this to get data

First root using this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
Jailbreak(bootloader unlock) / Root / TWRP Recovery -- Even after update [26JAN13]

Then mod your apn settings with this it's simpler then what's posted above

[MOD] Add APN editor to System Settings
