But it won't show up with a little checkmark in the text balloon. Instead, it comes as a notification. And if you use a third party text app, SMS Popup in my case, it won't work at all.

First thing, switch to hand scent for messaging. Next when it's delivered it gives the time. If failed you'll get an X and a notification. A checkmark isn't really needed then.

When the text is delivered, you get a time stamp. That essentially is acting as the check mark. If the text is not sent, you will not see a time stamp next to the text bubble.
Well on non-smartphones, theres a checkmark next to the bubble for m2m. There would be an arrow if the recipient is not on Verizon.
Is there any way to know from the stock messaging app?
