This problem has to do with my phone staying connected after plugging it in to my computer. After plugging in my phone, it will show up as a portable device per the screen shot below:
But after picking the phone up and using it for any reason, it will disappear from the portable device list and I have to unplug-plug the GS3 back in to get it back. All the while, the status bar on the phone says it's connected as a media device. It's pretty obvious to me that waking the phone up and using it is causing it to disconnect as a portable device. I understand it can't be a portable connected device and a phone at the same time... So my problem isn't that it's disconnecting, it's that I have to unplug-plug the phone in. Anyone else having this problem and knows a work around?
