Group Messaging Question, with MMS

I am a little confused about the way group text messages are handled with the stock messaging app. If someone sends a mms to multiple people and I send a message back in the individual messages tab, a message goes to each person in the whole group. I would assume that it would just go back to the sender but apparently that is not the case. So what is the difference between individual message and group message tabs? I just want to easily respond to the sender, not everyone. Is there a way to force this without leaving the group message and going to the individual and sending a message there?
