1- Being connected to Wifi give you an instant lock obviously.
2- When cold booting the GPS (meaning starting it up after a restart or having the GPS off), it may bounce around on the map for a bit (anywhere from 3-15 seconds) while it hunts down satelites.
3- You get a quicker lock outside or in the car generally.
4- Once you get a good lock, each time you go into maps, it is much quicker and accurate at pinpointing your location provided you don't restart the phone or turn off/on the GPS toggle.
I'm trying to make sure my GPS is functioning correctly. I never have issues on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (but that's always on Wifi so of course there is no problem) and I don't recall ever paying much attention to how long it took for a lock on my old Droid Incredible. I tried pulling it out to compare just now, but since the only way I can use it is WiFi, of course its instant now. Doh!
I compared my GS3 with my dad's GS3 and it seems to be about the same. The only thing I observed was he already had a lock when I opened maps where I hadn't yet so once I cold started both and checked, they behaved identical. They bounced around a lot trying to lock (eventually they do, but it takes a bit), but if I went into the yard, they locked instantly. After that, they've been spot on though after that initial lock.
Does this sound about normal?
Thanks! (Oh, and sorry for the lengthy post, just trying to figure out if I'm being OCD or if there is an issue. LOL )
