Weird Verizon issue yesterday

I was driving around last night had full service in 4G and my phone lost all signal and said no sim for roughly 2-3 min this happened several times and my buddy who is on a different phone but still on Verizon said his phone did that several time last night in his house so I know it wasn't me loosing signal any ideas what this Strange thing was?

Verizon sometimes has their system go down in certain areas for brief periods. It doesn't happen often but I've seen it 3 or 4 times in the last few years.
