Not a fan of stock messaging or Handcent app. What else should I try?

Wait a few more days and use Hangouts once the updated version with SMS integration comes out.

Go SMS is a popular one, but I can't tell you any more than that. I found Handcent first and liked it, so never bothered trying Go SMS or any others.

I use the Verizon messaging app and love it. I have it installed on my Galaxy Note8 as well and get sms on both devices.

I've had both Handcent and Go SMS. I preferred Handcent but since you've already used it, give Go a shot. I stopped using it because they got way too pushy in trying to get you to pay for their monthly service and themes.

I downloaded go SMS pro and I am liking it so far

I'm fond of Verizon Messaging as well. I like that I was able to install it on my wifi only Nexus 7 and have my SMSes sync over the internet. The web interface needs some work but it's still great to be able to log onto there and use a physical keyboard for messages too.

You're all going to kill me for this, but I tried the iOS7 theme for gosms and I actually like it so mess around with themes too OP, they have some good ones
