strange screen after downloading apps

This doesn't happen all the time but occasionally after downloading an app or game, the widgets and icons on the 3 homescreens I use become contorted and resized. The HTC widgets become halved, yet retaining their border so they look like rectangles..and some 3rd party apps blow up to twice their size. The calander widget's information becomes written over itself. The whole thing looks as though my phone had an aneurysm. The only fix I found is to uninstall the offending app, then reboot the phone.
Does anyone know what would cause this?

I only go as far as allowing 'modify sd card' and 'network settings'. Once in awhile I'll allow 'read phone state & identity' if it seems appropriate, but I don't go beyond that for permissions.

I guess its just one of those "phone specific" kind of things. I thought maybe someone else may have had this issue.
