I had my hands setup in a way so that if I slipped I would bend my thumb backwards instead of drop or break the device.

Long story short...I bent my thumb backwards. Doesn't help that the notch is meant for a Smurf to stick their finger in.

HTC hating on my calloused, manly fingers :'(
