Is this a hardware or software issue? Anyone else having this quirky touch input issue?

I'm now noticing that touch input, esp. noticeable then using keyboard, is wonky towards the bottom half of the screen. For example trying to type "k" registers "k" and "o". It's very aggravating. However, I don't recall this being an issue a few days ago. I observed this behavior on stock and 3rd party keyboard, like swiftkey.
I think this might have started when I attempted to "calibrate" touch input within the keyboard settings menu. I've since reset to factory settings but get the same quirky behavior. Interestingly, when I go thru the calibration test (quick brown fox...), I sometimes have to type the letter a few times for it to register.
I tested the touch response using "touch test" market app. This shows touching near the top bottom's half of the screen is registering two touches instead of one...thus the "k" and "o" registered touch inputs (above).
