observation about the noise cancelling mic

Anyone else notice that the two holes for the noise cancelling Mic on the back cover are actually covered by metal and less to two contacts on the inside of the phone? I don't know if that is standard for noise cancellation but maybe it's why don.do.f us have a background hiss during our calls and low volume during video recording.

any one know of a way (or if it's even possible) to just use it as a noise canceling device with you head phones?

Those two holes on the back are for the 4g antennae. The hole on the top is for the noise canceling.
