Brett the app piece of this is certainly a good theory, except for the fact that there's no difference in the apps in use on my phone pre- and post OTA. The 3G/4G thing seems to be it. Maybe they've decided to forsake the 3Gers since we'll eventually all be 4G?

So you are experiencing worse battery performance with identical Apps and settings?

Interesting, Yesterday I downloaded the update at work while experiencing very good 4G coverage. I normally leave the phone in 3G for better battery performance, since I dont have 4G at home, but do at work. But yesterday, i decided to turn on 4G and download the update and see whats what. Bottom line is that the phone was draining fairly quickly all day, was recharging at my desk and in the car on the way home, but still had trouble keeping the phone above 50% for any length of time. Last night I decided to switch back to 3G, and once again the battery is holding very strong. Still above 90% since taking phone off the charger a few hours ago.

And I still want an app that will rate each and every App's power consumption. Better yet, developers should be required to disclose the power consumption figures for all developed Apps. Kind of like how all packaged food manufacturers are required to display the caloric content on the package of the food itself.

Brett, yes, same apps and settings. Trying to remember if I updating any apps last night. I may have, but if so it was still long after the drain was already hitting me.

Hmm I'm having the reverse issue. Since the 4G downtime a few weeks ago I had had abyssmal battery life when in 4G, had to set to 3G permanently to get a day out of my phone (even with extended battery) - called VZW and got some useless troglodyte so nothing there. Since the OTA I've been back in 4G and having great battery life again. Clearly something is wrong somewhere and VZW just has no idea what they are doing unfortunately.

Just anecdotal, but my battery seems to be better in standby than before the update.

I've only dropped 3 percent in about 3.5 hours off the charger. I'm am on Wifi most of the day though and have not used the phone much this morning.

Try using Battery Calibrator. I am rooted with the bamf rom but was getting HORRIBLE battery life before. I got a full 24 hours on one charge with moderate usage. I even called my sister with 5% battery life left to try and get it to fully die before I recharged and 5% lasted me ~22 minutes on the phone with her.

Try using Battery Calibrator.

That only works when you're rooted. Some of us are still stock (and happy to remain so until GB is released).

Besides, before the update I had a perfectly acceptable battery, now it's atrocious. Slightly better today than it was yesterday, but still much worse than before the OTA. I really hope that it's just a matter of the phone remembering how to properly use the battery again and it'll get better.

If the firmware is updated, is there a chance the phone needs to relearn how to manage processes? Remember when you first got the phone battery life was awful, but after using it for two weeks there was dramatic improvement?

I'm hoping you're right. I agree that it took a couple of weeks for it to settle into battery life I can live with. Hopefully mine is just going through a readjustment phase but battery life is definitely worse since I got the update yesterday. Mine also powered itself completely off today with 73% battery left. It had never rebooted or done this on its own before.

Hannsoft, I'm having the same problem! I took my phone off a 98% charge at 8:45 last night and was dead before midnight with almost no usage! I wonder whats going on?

Also: My phone is also charging slow as hell now. I've had it on my USB charger for hte last 2 hours and it has barely even charged. I've tried rebooting and all of that.

Another data point: my battery life has improved very significantly. In a decent 4G area, before the OTA I was draining at 8-10%/hour on standby, and now draining at 4%/hour. (Stock phone, using 4G and not wifi)

Dragon, I'm doing better today. Left the office at 5pm topped off. Right now, at 9pm, the point at which I was (what'd I say, 16%?) low last night, I'm now at 47%. Not great, bit a marked improvement from last night. Exact same phone activity as last night.

And YES, I'm charging a LOT slower! Took longer today at the office to get to 100%

I am in a decent 4g area, and my battery life improved significantly! I got over 13 hours today, and still had 25% left when I got off work today! :) Battery life before was horrid! I hope this keeps up!

Hmm. Hopefully mine will show improvement over the next couple of days then. That's all i can hope for. That or a fix from HTC lol.

Just my opinion, but I got to believe the huge discrepancies in battery drainage from one TB to another, must be nearly entirely the result of what Apps have been downloaded to the device, and how it is configured.

There have been many threads discussing ways to improve battery life with proper phone settings and the like, but what we really need is an App that will definitively meter and quantify individual application battery drainage statistics. An App that gives benchmarked power consumption statistics with no gray areas or room for varying interpretation.

If there was such an App, who wouldnt have it on their Android device? Of course, it would be nice if this master power monitoring App didnt gobble juice like a monstrous black hole itself. ;)

System Panel

Set it to monitor usage for a day or so.

Nate, THANK YOU! Wow, that is one of the coolest such apps I have seen ANYWHERE. Thanks so much for making that one public here!

I only got 13 hours total today and I hardly touched my phone. I'm used to being able to get about 24-28 hours with use like that. I never understood what everyone was complaining about until the OTA. Now I get it. If I had been using it like normal I might have made 5 hours. That is not acceptable.

Got 12 hours+ today without charging, while in Atlantic City where being inside a casino will eat up almost any battery. But also experienced my first random reboot.

I actually had a great day with the phone yesterday. Between 8am and around 4:30pm I went from 100% to about 65%. The System Panel bar graph for battery usage shows a nice steady decline all day. The difference?

I barely touched the phone all day.

I'd killed the two tasks that I know worked the hardest (aside from text messaging) on my phone regularly - Weatherbug and Tweetdeck - and did little with the phone but check, and occasionally send, a text message. At one point I did start up Tweetdeck so that it could collect tweets, but I shut it right down again. And of course we know, too, that this gorgeous display does us in every time we use it.

So battery usage seems to be a little better for me now. If we can all figure how to use this phone with turning the display on - or without touching the thing - we'll be all set!
