I have the Google+ icon on the notification screen. I downloaded all the pictures but this icon won't go away. Any thoughts on how to get it gone from there.

I think for most notifications you can go into the app manager. In there you'll find most apps have a box checked for notifications. If you uncheck it, it should go away.
