so i cracked my VS980 3 weeks ago...at the bottome glass. not evn on the screen itself. well it worked for a lil bit the parts on the touch ...like 1 line in particular (of course the line with the send button!!!0\) sooooo i got a new LCD /assy. worked great for a week. 2 days ago went to go make a call. screen went black like its supposed to ...BUTTTT never came back. i have it set touse the power to end call...NOOTHING. have to hold power and soft reset every call. did not try quick window case i have but 1 thing i know . i took it all apart last night after readijng a zillion diff. forums with same exact prob. one kidd mentioned the placement of the screws which i never even thought to look. they have 3 types. 1 black tiny one , then like a brass ir sometype and regular metal. of courser ididnt see tihis article till after . so im gonna try switching them around . it may have some sort of grounding. some are shorter then others too. 1 MORE THING> if it was taken apart...make sure the metal tape at the bottom under the flex cable was put back. i had no problems till i did lol

just wanted to share what i found solved my screen goin black during call and not turning back on without soft reset....i took a safety pin and slowley put it through the left side of the ear piece, under the face of the phone, and above the prox. and light sensor. BANG came right back on. took it out. didnt work. slowly slid back in, works fine. i ll just snip it and leave it in there. SEE PICTURE

My wife's G2 started to blackout th screen when a call is made and removing the phone from your ear does not turn it back on. It has the quick window cse and if you open and close the small windows allows you to end the call. Any solution?

I just had a customer's phone I was replacing the screen assembly on, and ended up with the same problem. Prox sensor worked when out of the frame, but when I put it back into it's nesting place, black screen during every call. I took several steps to try and get it working (cleaned it, removed the dark film over the glass where the prox sensor and ambient light sensor go, vacuumed it out, etc) but nothing worked. End result, I replaced the prox sensor with a new one and everything's raining puppies now. I've looked farther, and attempted to use the same replacement screen and the old sensor in another phone just to try my luck, and it works flawlessly. Here would be the best way to troubleshoot it:

    1. Clean the prox sensor and glass of the screen thoroughly (the side that faces the sensor).
    2. Pull the prox sensor out of the frame, hook up your mainboard connections, and try the sensor outside of the frame. If it works correctly here, you know the sensor is at least working. Granted, working in open air and working from behind the screen are 2 different things, but it helps narrow down the problem.
    3. If you've just replaced the screen, try using the original screen again, see if it persists. If it does the same thing with the original screen back in, then perhaps it's a hardware problem with the sensor itself. If it starts working, there could be an imperfection in the screen itself.
    4. Try another prox sensor. A new sensor is only going to run you $8-$10, so it's not going to break the bank to replace. These are extremely delicate, and can be thrown off by just about anything. Too much bend in the cable, the sensor shifting inside it's plastic frame, etc. If nothing else, purchase one you know you can return for testing purposes. Try it, and use that information to try and get the original to work properly.

I've done several screen replacements on the G2. One thing I've noticed, if you replace just the assembly and re-use the original frame, they don't quite sit right, but the sensor NEVER has an issue. If you replace the screen with a new frame to ease the installation, sometimes the prox sensor just doesn't want to work. In this case, it takes a lot of fiddling to get it to start working correctly. So, it just comes down to your comfort level with a repair. I hope this helps.

I have a note3 with the same black screen on Vonage Extensions - dragging your finger slowly across the top (camera logo speaker) works for me too - thanks very much.

After I cracked my screen I started having this issue with my VS980. Tried pretty much every method over a month.

I tried swiping the top over the sensor, it worked and then stopped.
Squeezing the top of the screen, it worked and then stopped.
Tried hardware disabler, couldn't find the proximity sensor. Don't bother with this method.
Tried proximity screen off, didn't work. Don't bother with this method either...
    Settings->call->... no advanced settings.
Tried putting it in a plastic bag, worked for a few times then it stopped.
Tried scrapping the "tint" in front of the sensor and it worked for awhile and of course it stopped.
After I got a new screen, I think its busted now.

So now I pretty much just use my Bluetooth headset when I make calls while I wait for my new sensor and otterbox. The screen doesn't turn off and is always on when I use my bluetooth.
Settings -> Call -> Show Dialpad. Check All Calls.

Turns out it wasn't proximity sensor being busted. After I replaced the sensor and screen it still did not work. I noticed a little lift on my screen so i clamped it down and it started working... So I took it apart, put my old sensor back, clamped it down and it was working... I thought it didn't work because I was squeezing pretty hard before, but apparently you need to put even more pressure. I used the lint-free cloth that came with my screen protector and a medium sized binder clip. After a few hours it was working without the clip. Download proximity sensor and it should register a 5 if there is enough pressure.... but as a warning don't squeeze insanely hard or else you'll end up with a cracked screen.

Just to be clear, if you screen goes black while making a call and stays black and wont come back on unless you pinch or squeeze proximity sensor area its an easy fix. Take back of with credit card, take small screw out from cover at top ( 7 screws I think) , remove cover with credit card and place 2 very small pieces of electrical tape on cushion behind the proximity sensor. Assemble in reverse

well I don't know about you but this guy would probably cut the pin and turn it the other way so it would stay in there so it's just a piece of metal underneath the phone screen I'm sure there's plenty other pieces of metal underneath the phone screen you just happen to be able to see this one. By the way I did cut the pin and turned it and it works great you can't put tape over it because then it won't work at all it has to have some light and I think the pin maybe reflects some of the light the way and some of it and I don't know if it worked😃😄😀

Excellent tip. I just cleaned the sensor so hopefully that should resolve it as well.

This work-around does work! Thanks for sharing! Now I won't be so annoyed when trying to end a call! :-) This is in response to the idea of sliding your finger across the top of your LG G2 phone when it goes blank after initiating a call and putting to your ear. It won't re-display when you take it from your ear to end the call. The inner camera and speaker are located at the top.

The way I fixed my blacking out issue was I removed back cover. there are about 7 small screws holding another cover above the battery section. After removing screws very carefully remove the second cover to access the proximity sensor. The proximity sensor is to far away from the front glass that is why phone blacks out. Using a tiny square piece of electrical tape stick it on the cover right behind the proximity sensor so it pushes the sensor closer to the screen. carefully re assembly everything.

I hope my instructions were clear this worked perfectly for mine

Shouldn't this be considered a defect? (I'm nervous about dismantling my phone).
Also, why does it only happen while on a call and not always? Unless/until the other party hangs up, my phone is useless. Argh

After reading responses on here I cleaned the sensors on the front of my phone an it totally worked. Guessing makeup buildup was making my phone think it was still against my face an licking the screen to keep me from pressing buttons.
