Spent all evening trying different ROMs, I chose 3 or 4 based on my previous experience and what I like... AOKP, Beanstalk, Dirty Unicorns, and CarbonROM... I went with Beanstalk
AOKP - I have heard this ROM was excellent for the G2 from several people, that it was just rock solid and feature packed... but I could not get it to install, tried re-downloading, comparing MD5sums, but just couldn't get it to even flash much less boot. My guess is there is something wrong with the build on the server, I was doing something wrong, or something weird because it really wasn't mentioned in the forums that others were having the issue. I would still like to figure out the problem and flash this, I haven't really heard anything bad about it.
CarbonROM - A veteran favorite of mine, nice ROM and feature packed, I played with it for about an hour before moving on (I seriously thought about sticking with this one)
Dirty Unicorns - I had heard a lot about his one on several hardware platforms, but never tried it... I was frankly impressed, the ROM is feature packed, has a very polished and clean feel to it, and is very fluid and powerful. This ROM surprised me with it's quality and feature set, the guys over at DU are doing things right... but I had to move to the last one...
Beanstalk - OK, for me this ROM is like coming home... no matter how nice it was were you where, being home is so comforting... I will be honest though, I don't know why more people don't use this ROM, it is extremely polished, stable, well laid out, and packed with more features than you can shake a stick at. In my opinion, this is one of the best ROMs out there for any device it supports, period... My config on both my Nexus 4 and my G2 is Beanstalk, PA Stock Gapps package, Nova Launcher Prime, Dashclock, and HD Widgets. My only issue with Beanstalk on the G2 is the "DSP Manager" issue, where DSP Manager stops when you use Apollo, Spotify, and some media players, but audio still plays fine, on my Nexus 4 there was a patch you could flash to fix it, haven't found a fix on G2 yet.
I have yet to try some of the other top ROMs for the G2,
Malladus,
XDABBEB's ROM,
Mahdi-ROM,
SlimKat, and
Paranoid Android, but I think it is one of those things that you just have to try it and go with the one you like best since no ROM will be everyone's favorite. If you are up for testing I would recommend trying all of these, if not, I would suggest Beanstalk, Paranoid Android, or Dirty Unicorns.
