How to turn off 4g

I got my s4 8 days ago and have been very disappointed with the signal i get I use to have a razor maxx. With my maxx i could turn off 4g and this helped make my connection more reliable i live and work in a rural area and Verizon s 4g is unreliable here but 3g is great. My question is how do I force my s4 to stay on 3g? I have googled and read a lot of post of what to do or what app to use none of it works it seems the last update restricted the phone why would they do this? If I can't fix this then I'll be going to get a droid maxx.
