Buying phone with no contract

So I was wondering how this would work with Verizon.

I currently have T-Mobile and basically if I want to buy a phone with no contract, I can just pay the full price and swap in my SIM card and i'm done.

Considering Verizon doesn't use SIM cards, unless its a 4G LTE device, how would it work if I want to buy a phone off contract? The thing is, I don't want to have minutes or texts, I just want 4G LTE data on it. Would I be able to just buy a phone at full price online with no contract and just go to Verizon and buy a data plan and call it a day? Would the phone keep giving me notifications that it's not connected to the network?

You can buy a phone at full price and then subscribe to pre-paid data. You can go to a VZW store and sign up for prepaid service and give you a 4G LTE sim-card.

They do offer data packages of $30/2gb, $50/5gb, and $80/10gb, same for pre-paid and post-paid.
