Early Edge Upgrade? Should I do it?

I have a lot of questions, so I will try and summarize at the end.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. I replaced it with Asurion last month because a week after it was out of warranty it became a brick.

I planned on buying g the new Moto X on the Early Edge. I was willing to give up the 120 trade in value for a new phone. The phone will be $25 on edge and I share a 10 GB plan, so the bill is a wash.

Well I cracked the screen on the replacement phone yesterday. I can live with the crack, it is a chip under the button. Problem is, Verizon won't accept it for the Edge.

For the record, I have never cracked a screen until now. I usually water damage them (twice in five years).

I am not poor, not well off either. I have been upgrading my phone every year using a dumbphone line.

Question 1: Should I replace the phone through Asurion and use the new phone as an early edge upgrade?
Question 2: If I do that can I just not get Asurion when I upgrade?

Question 3: What do you consider the best insurance carrier, since I am obviously not gray at taking care. I have a couple old phones lying around, but not my favorite thing to do.
