3G now and 4G later?

From what I've heard, the Droid Bionic has been delayed. BUT the Droid X2 should be out soon. I really like the X's form factor, and I think I'm going to make the jump. Just one question: if I buy a 3G phone now, then, say, buy a 4G phone on ebay next year, can I upgrade? Will my plan automatically change? Or will there be a problem because I will be locked into a 2 year 3G contract?

If anybody here works for Verizon, I would appreciate your help.

Thanks,

I asked this in my local Verizon store when I was considering a Thunderbolt, and the rep told me that the data plan is the data plan - makes no difference whether you're actually using 3G or 4G.

Caveats:
- Local sales reps are notoriously poor sources of reliable information about future changes, and we don't have 4G in this area (supposed to be here by end of 2011)
- He also told me he'd never heard of any plans for Verizon to change from $29.99 unlimited to tiered data plans
