No, Verizon doesn't have towers in Ghana, and the frequencies used for cellphones (and the small amount of power they transmit) won't go far enough to reach a tower in the US. You can check the local carriers in Ghana to see if any of them have arrangements with Verizon to allow Verizon customers to roam on their towers. (But a local SIM would probably be much cheaper - Verizon is about the most expensive wireless carrier there is.)

Welcome to Android Central! You should still be able to roam -- it's actually not too steep on Verizon: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e?...token=zdStEErh. $10/day if you actually use it for that day -- otherwise, you don't get charged for the day.

You don't get charged if you stay on airplane mode. The minute you turn on cellular the 24 hour clock commences and you get charged the $10.
