after my Bluetooth keyboard sleeps on android lollypop, why won't it reconnect?

I connect my Bluetooth keyboard. I use it. after the default inactive period, it sleeps, breaking the connection. when I try to reconnect, lollipop won't register the reconnection attempt. I have to turn Bluetooth off, then back on again before it will reconnect. using HTC m7. please fix!
