Contacts can not be updated or moved to groups on phone

I have been noticing lately that if I try to modify a contact listing or move it to another group (like Favorites) it does not stick.

The only way I can edit the contact is through Gmail Contacts on my computer unless I delete the entry on the phone (like a phone number) and then reenter it on the phone.

If I try to move the contact to another group, it will hold for a while but then reverts. I think it does this when it syncs with gmail.

Is there a way I can do these things on the phone and have it then sync with gmail contacts and then stick?

BTW this happens with the standard Address Book with my EVO and with Youlu Address Book.
