M8S+ no status bar or notifications

Folks,
Recently purchased M8S+ running lollipop 5.1.1 has no status bar or notifications and no options to toggle such on/off (eg:settings>display>status bar)
Is this a fault with the firmware?
Is there an update/fix?
Should I downgrade firmware to kitkat (if so I would need link to firmware and step by step instructions - firmware install for dummies).
