I had a similar-appearing problem with my Galaxy S Captivate (i897).

Here's what worked for me:
Start Odin
Boot into Download Mode (that is, do what should normally put the phone in download mode).
Ignore the fact that Odin doesn't seem to see your phone or that the phone doesn't look normal for download mode and use the usual instructions for flashing your phone via Odin.
If it doesn't work, try again.
If it doesn't work, remove battery, reinstall it and try again.

I know these phones are really hard to fully brick. Semi-bricked is pretty common if you're messing with non-stock firmware.

Flash a known-good (as in previously worked on your phone) boot loader and firmware image.
I think you will get your phone back working after a few tries.
