Samsung S3 Messenger app stopped working

Hello,

At some point in time I seem to have told my stock messenger app to stop deleting messages, I don't recall why. It started getting really laggy and I changed the setting to actually delete old messages. I went into my app to manually delete messages. I went to press a thread to delete it and it froze. I exited, restarted my phone and have cleared the cache and whatnot and now the app refuses to do anything. It's actually making my phone freeze. It tries to load but it won't respond. I am not sure what else there is to do, other than find a new app?
