Android Connected to a USB Printer and Charging at the same time

Hi,
I have an Android 4 tablet which I am connecting to a USB printer using the micro-USB port. The comms are OK, but I need to charge the tablet at the same time.

Can this be done with a Y-cable?

So, I need to apply an external USB power charger to the Y to charge the tablet, but also allow the other side of the Y to connect to a USB printer for comms from the tablet too.

Any experiences would be very interesting. I can build my own cables too.
