Why am I able to get my Galaxy S3 Mini with Mac iPhoto to launch but not the Nexus4 data window?

galaxy s3 mini with mac iphoto launches but no nexus4 data window

so this is great for photos but no use for any other data

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry, I'm a bit confused. You have an S3 Mini, and are using iPhoto on a Mac? How does the Nexus 4 figure into this?

If you mean that it opens photos you received (or copied) from a Mac, but it doesn't do anything with a data file you copied from a Nexus 4, computers (smartphones are computers) don't open files, apps do. You evidently don't have an app on the S3 that can handle the filetype of the file you're getting from the Nexus 4. Try installing the app that creates the file on the Nexus 4 on the S3. Then the S3 should handle the file.
