why does my LG Optimus screen go black when I go to the internet?

I have a LG Optimus touch screen phone. When I try to go to the internet my screen goes black. When I do a total reset on the phone it starts to go to the internet. After the phone does all the updates again the phone will not go to the internet. The screen of the subject I typed in will come up but the actual program I am trying to view goes black.

Welcome to Android Central! Which Optimus is it? So the phone otherwise works ok? The homescreen shows up? Can you make calls?

How are you trying to go to the internet? Are you tapping the browser icon to open it, and then the screen goes black? Does the entire screen go black, or does the browser just open to a blank screen, with the browser controls still visible? Are you able to access the web with other apps like Facebook?

When you say "total reset," do you mean a simple reboot (i.e., powering off, then powering back on), or a factory data reset?
