Why isn't 2g working but 3g is okay?

2g only not working but 3g is okay

if i use 2g only mode is not working but if i change it to 3g only there is no problem but if i go to places where 3g is not available my phone is no signal since the 2g or gsm signal is not working? i dont do anything or change any of my software... it happen when im using internet almost evryday by 3g mode... then the 2g is not working... please help
