All media "pauses" and won't play until after a restart

This is on a rooted Galaxy S4 with a fresh (<5 days old) factory data reset. I've installed minimal apps since then.

I've seen this documented elsewhere but have yet to find a solution. Basically, all media on 4.4.2 gets stuck in "pause." BeyondPod Pro, YouTube, Pandora, Shuttle+. . . everything. If I press "play" I get audio or playback for less than a second -- just an instant bit of playback -- and the media automatically pauses immediately. No matter how many times I press "play," it won't play. It's like watching a movie by flipping through frames one at a time.

I'm at my wit's end on this one. This is a crushing bug and I have no idea what's causing it. This seems to be relatively recent, though, as my phone worked fine for months before this appeared but now even a factory reset seems to have not cured the problem (or an app is causing interference somehow).

If I restart the phone things work again. Everything might work correctly for several hours or a couple days, but at some point I'll pick up the phone and try to play a podcast or music and I find that I have to restart again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
