I purchased the phone and I didn't know that I had to buy a sd card for it. I used up the phones memory then I put an empty sd card in the phone and the phone refuses to download anything.

Hello. Apps can only be downloaded and installed on the device storage, not directly to the sd card.

Go to Settings - General - Applications Manager - SD Card or All and touch downloaded apps for the App Info screen. If it's possible, there will be a Move to SD Card switch enabled. This will only move a little or a lot of the app to the card, but it should give a little more space.
